The Laws we Know Even When we Don't

Did you ever play space invaders? A clever game but an awful waste of time. The first time I played it I played for about 6 hours. When I went to bed all I could see were invaders marching and dropping out of the sky and all I could do was play the game in my head until I finally drifted off

I think that put me off computer games for life. I still enjoy playing around with the machines but games tend not to do it for me. But the point of this article is to discuss laws that we obey even when we don't understand them. To shoot the bighters you had to figure out when to fire because it took time for the dots to travel from the cannon to invader.

This sort of thing applies to all sports but in something like clay pigeon shooting, time and distance are obvious factors. Other laws that we obey even when we don't undersand can be seen in archery. From a simple bow, if you aimed your arrow directly at the bull it would land off target due to gravity wind speed and wind resistance so you would adjust your aim accordingly.

We can see the common sense in these things so why do so many of us not apply common sense when it comes to the law of consequences. When you start a new job you have to work the first month before your first wage. This time lapse is well understood even if it can be a hardship. But we are so often caught out with things like bills, oversleeping, hangovers, fallings out and we need TV experts to point out simple truths that we could have figured out for ourselves.

I'm not going to attempt at explaining why this is or suggest a remedy but its worth remembering that whatever you do now will have an effect on whatever happens in the next five minutes, the next half hour, the next day and the next week. But if something takes a week to resolve don't expect it to resolve in the next half hour.

The good news is that the most critical time is the next five minutes. If you are in a skid there's no point in worrying how much tread is on your tires, you've just got to do the best you can with what you've got. If you've got an appointment in 25 minutes and it will take you half an hour to get there you can forget about the appointment, you have to make a phone call.

We all need good news so that's a good place to start if you will acknowledge that it is good news.
